IVF Treatment proceure steps
Dr. Arun Muthuvel explains the steps involved in an IVF cycle.
Short sumary about IVF Steps
The first step is ovarian stimulation. This step is done to increase the number of follicles (eggs) that develop. Medications are injected from day 2 or 3 of the menstrual period for 10 days. During this time, scans are done to monitor the follicles.
The next step is ovulation trigger. An injection is given to trigger ovulation (release of eggs) after the follicles have matured. After ovulation, eggs are collected through a procedure called egg pickup. This is done under anesthesia using an ultrasound guided needle to aspirate eggs from the follicles.
Then, fertilization happens. Sperm is collected and the best sperms are selected to fertilize the eggs. Fertilized eggs are called embryos. The embryos are cultured in a lab for 3-5 days.
After that, one or two embryos are transferred back into the uterus (embryo transfer). This is a simple procedure that does not require anesthesia.
Two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test is done to see if the IVF cycle is successful.
The entire IVF cycle typically takes around 30 days. If there are extra embryos, they can be frozen for future use. This can be helpful if you want to have another child later or if the first attempt at IVF is not successful.
